The Department of Pathology was established in 1993 and began serving the hospital¡¯s patients at the end of that year. Since its formation, the department¡¯s workload has been on steadily rising. The routine pathological cases for 2007 were more than 31,000 and frozen sections over 2500. The comprehensive pathological services offered include: routine pathological section, frozen section, renal biopsy, bone marrow biopsy, cytopathology, immuno-histochemistry, oncogene test and some virus detection. The department is composed of 17 staff members, including 9 pathologists; 7 of these hold master¡¯s degree, 3 are senior pathologists and 2 received specialty training in HK. Dr. Hadley, former director of our hospital and senior pathology expert from Loma Linda University, USA, lead out in the work of the department in the early years.
In addition to its clinical functions, the department also provides education for clinicians and postgraduate students who rotate through the department, as well as participating in the research projects of various clinical departments.
Since 1995, the department has been inspected yearly by the pathology quality control society of ZhejiangProvince and has received awards of excellence many times. It enjoys a reputation for high slide quality and superior diagnostic accuracy and as a result has become a training center for pathologists and technicians of the province.
The department has developed a strong academic atmosphere and possesses a large number of Chinese and English professional references, including the complete atlas of tumor pathology of AFIP, the series of WHO classification of tumors, the original and translated editions of Ackerman¡¯s Surgical Pathology, Diagnostic Surgical Pathology and many others. It maintains close contact with the Medical Center of Loma Linda University, USA, and CTTR (California Tumor Tissue Registry) and discusses difficult, unusual or rare cases with these and other institutions on a regular basis. In addition, the pathology department became a formal attendee of CTTR in 2000 and has participated in their monthly case discussions ever since. All the slide discussions (the clinical history, glass slide and final diagnosis of each case) of CTTR from 1993 are kept on file in the department.
