Corneal injuries and diseases are of special interest to the staff of twelve (nine ophthalmologists, three ophthalmic technicians), several of whom have contributed professional papers to international eye journals, citing the work done by this department in quest of new diagnostic and therapeutic measures.Glaucoma, cataracts and other vision-limiting problems are treated and managed in this department.

In its role as a university-affiliated teaching institution, SRRSH accepts selected medical students from undergraduate through doctoral levels, for advanced training.The Ophthalmology Department participates in this academic program, following the guidelines established by the International Council of Ophthalmology and the AmericanAcademy of Ophthalmology.

Physician researchers at the Ophthalmology Department continue investigation of new therapies in the treatment and repair of injuries to the surface of the eye.At present, they have particular interest in the role of fungi in eye infections, and the use of transplanted cells for reconstruction of the ocular surface.
