Nuclear Medicine is defined as that medical specialty concerned with the safe use of unsealed sources of radiation used in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Our radiation protection for patients follows three fundamental principles: Justification of practice, optimization of protection and dose limitation.
Our department was organized in 1995 and now we have two major instrumentations, a Camstar 3200 SPECT and a Millennium VG SPECT/CT, manufactured by a subsidiary of the American company, GE. Advanced instrumentation of this type is essential for nuclear clinical practice and research.
Diagnostic Characteristics
As an integral part of patient care, nuclear medicine is used in the diagnosis, management and prevention of disease. Nuclear medicine imaging procedures often identify abnormalities very early in the progression of a disease. Early detection allows a disease to be treated early in its course when there may be a more successful prognosis. Scans are used to diagnose many medical conditions and diseases.
One of the more common tests is internal radiotherapy. This is done by administering or planting a small radiation source, usually a gamma or beta emitter, in the target area. Radiotherapies are used to treat many medical conditions and diseases.
