The SRRSH department of endocrinology is the onlyfacility in the province which has the authorization of ZhejiangUniversity to provide education leading to a medical Ph.D in endocrinology and metabolism. It is also one of the bases approved by the Ministry of Health for the training of residents in endocrinology and metabolism. There are 12 physicians in the department, 6 of which have advanced titles and four have taken further training in U.S.A., Germany or Japan.The department of endocrinology has developed several subdivisions of service.

1.Comprehensive Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus: The department provides excellent inter-disciplinary services. In addition to experienced physician specialists, the hospital has diabetic nutritionists, one advanced nurse for diabetic foot therapy and several advanced nurses for diabetic education. The department provides 72-hour continuous glucose monitoring systems, insulin pumps, doppler detectors of blood flow in the extremities, and multi-function inspectroscopes for measuring skin temperature in the extremities.The overall condition of the diabetic patient can be evaluated as well as chronic complications and special areas such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, diabetic foot conditions, endocrine related cardiovascular disease, and pancreatic islet function. They can also prescribe comprehensive, detailed, individualized therapy plans that may include diet, exercise, and drugs.

2.The diseases of thyroid gland: The physicians of this department have extensive clinical experience in diagnosing and treating the diseases of the thyroid gland. Examples include: hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, Hashimoto thyroiditis, subacute thyroiditis, thyroid nodules, and thyrotoxic ophthalmopathy. By working closely with the division of nuclear medicine and the division of head and neck surgery, the physicians of this department greatly improve the curative rate of thyroid diseases.

3. Metabolic bone diseases: The physicians of this department also have considerable experience in diagnosing and treating primary and secondary osteoporosis and parathyroid diseases. The department has a DPX-IQ dual energy X-ray bone densitometer, which can evaluate osteoporosis quickly and precisely, and provides convenient service for many patients. According to the etiology of osteoporosis for each patient, reasonable plans for prevention and treatment can be offered.

4.Diagnosis and treatment of other common and complicated endocrinology and metabolic diseases: The department¡¯s physicians also have clinical experience in diagnosing and treating diseases of the adrenal glands, sexual glands, hypothalamus and pituitary as well as endocrine hypertension, dyslipidemia, gout and obesity.
