This department has been a tertiary emergency care and critical care center in the metropolitan Hangzhou. It has become the principal teaching facility of the Zhejiang university school of medicine.

Combining the emergency department and intensive care unit in 2004 facilitated and expedited the transfer and early progressive intervention of critical ill patients.  This has significantly improved the survival rate for trauma and septic shock patients.  Respiratory therapist in this department was the first professional team in China. This has proven to be a great help for airway management and care of ventilator dependent patients.

The department philosophy is that our faculty, in addition to being excellent educators and providing the highest quality compassionate patient care, must also advance knowledge in our specialty and in medicine globally. Our training program offers a balance of clinical and bench research experience, as well as superb clinical experience for various levels doctors.
